GNAT Gives Government Two-Week Ultimatum Over Alleged Assault on Teachers by Soldiers in Wassa West

Concerns are growing within the education sector after the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) issued a two-week ultimatum to President John Dramani Mahama and the government over an alleged assault on teachers by military officers in the Wassa West District.

The incident, which reportedly involved soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Battalion at Apremdo in Takoradi, has sparked outrage among teachers across the country.

Teachers in the district claim they were assaulted and humiliated by the soldiers, a situation GNAT leadership says is both disturbing and unacceptable.

During an interview with 3news reporter Daniel Opoku in Accra, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah expressed concern about the growing cases of attacks against teachers in different parts of the country.

According to him, teachers are increasingly becoming victims of abuse from students, parents, community members, and now even security personnel.

“Students are attacking teachers, parents are attacking them, community members are attacking them, and now the military too. Why?” he questioned.

Mr. Musah warned that patience among teachers is wearing thin and stated that if the government fails to identify and arrest the soldiers involved within two weeks, the situation could trigger nationwide action.

“Our message is simple. If within two weeks nothing is done, President John Dramani Mahama and the authorities in charge should be held responsible for whatever follows,” he stated.

The GNAT General Secretary further warned that the association is prepared to embark on nationwide action that could disrupt activities across the country.

“Whatever happens, even if the country has to come to a standstill, we are ready to do it. It is the responsibility of the state to protect citizens. If the state fails to do so, we will protect ourselves,” he added.

For many teachers, the incident has raised fresh concerns about their safety and respect in the line of duty.

As the two-week deadline begins, attention is now focused on the government and security agencies to investigate the matter and ensure those responsible are brought to justice before the situation escalates further.
