GTEC Introduces Certificate Verification Requirement Ahead of Teacher Recruitment 2026.
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has rolled out a new requirement mandating prospective teachers and other applicants under the Ministry of Education to undergo certificate evaluation and authentication as part of the recruitment process.
In a formal communication issued on April 9, 2026, the Commission indicated that this directive replaces the earlier clearance procedure previously overseen by the Ministry of Finance. GTEC explained that the revised approach is intended to reinforce transparency and credibility in recruitment by confirming that all academic qualifications submitted by applicants are legitimate and issued by duly accredited institutions.
The Commission noted that the policy change is in response to increasing concerns over the rise in forged certificates and qualifications from unapproved institutions. It emphasized that all tertiary credentials—ranging from diplomas to doctoral degrees—must now be presented to GTEC for proper verification before any recruitment decision is made.
Operating under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), GTEC is responsible for accrediting tertiary institutions and validating academic credentials. The Commission believes this measure will uphold standards within the education sector and prevent individuals without valid qualifications from entering the teaching service.
This directive covers all agencies under the Ministry of Education involved in recruiting both teaching and non-teaching staff. GTEC has therefore called on the affected institutions to act promptly in implementing the new system to ensure a seamless transition.
Observers within the education sector are expected to closely assess how this development may influence recruitment timelines and access for applicants nationwide.
