Interior Ministry Declares Friday, July ..., 2026 as Statutory Public Holiday for Republic Day

The Ministry of the Interior has officially declared Friday, July 3, 2026, as a statutory public holiday to be observed nationwide in commemoration of Republic Day.

In a statement issued on June 24, 2026, the Ministry explained that Republic Day falls on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, which is a statutory public holiday. However, President John Dramani Mahama, acting through an Executive Instrument (E.I.) and in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended, has declared Friday, July 3, 2026, as the day to be observed as the public holiday nationwide.

The declaration means that all citizens, public institutions, private organizations, and businesses are expected to observe Friday, July 3, 2026, as a public holiday.

Republic Day marks an important milestone in Ghana’s history. It commemorates July 1, 1960, when the country officially became a republic after gaining independence in 1957. The day serves as a reminder of Ghana’s democratic journey, national sovereignty, and commitment to self-governance.

The announcement was signed by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP), and takes effect across the country.

Citizens are encouraged to take note of the declaration and make the necessary arrangements regarding work, business activities, and other engagements scheduled for that period.
