Stay focused, avoid bad company – GES advises BECE candidates

The Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region has advised candidates who have completed the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to remain disciplined and make responsible choices as they prepare to transition into Senior High School (SHS). The Service stressed that this period is crucial, as it marks an important shift in the academic and personal development of learners.

The GES explained that the completion of the BECE should not be seen as an endpoint, but rather the beginning of a new phase that requires greater responsibility, focus, and proper preparation for the demands of senior high school education. It noted that students must begin to adjust their mindset to align with the expectations of their next academic level.

The Public Relations Officer of the Keta Municipal GES, Mr Ferdinand Amuzu, congratulated the candidates for successfully completing their examinations and encouraged them to remain focused while awaiting their results. He reminded them that the excitement after the examinations should not lead to careless behaviour or poor decision-making.

Mr Amuzu further advised the candidates to be mindful of their associations, warning that negative peer influence at this stage could derail their future ambitions. He also encouraged them to uphold good behaviour and, where possible, support their families in preparations for their entry into SHS.

He emphasised that academic success alone is not enough to guarantee a successful future, adding that discipline, attitude, and character play a significant role in shaping long-term outcomes. According to him, students must learn to comport themselves well in all environments, as the habits they develop now often determine their direction in life.

Mr Amuzu also noted that senior high school life comes with increased academic demands, greater independence, and exposure to new social environments, all of which require maturity, discipline, and focus. He cautioned that students who become complacent after BECE often face adjustment challenges in SHS, particularly in their first year, which may negatively affect their academic performance.
