Mahama Announces New Low-Cost Housing Programme for Teachers, Nurses and Public Sector Workers.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a comprehensive affordable housing initiative aimed at providing teachers, nurses, doctors, and other civil servants with access to quality and reasonably priced homes across the country.
The initiative was officially unveiled on Saturday, May 9, 2026, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Green City Housing Project at Dedesua in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region. The project is expected to deliver more than 1,000 housing units.
Addressing participants at the event, President Mahama stated that in ñ intervention forms part of a broader national strategy to tackle the growing housing deficit confronting many public sector workers.
He explained that the programme is being implemented through a partnership involving government, organised labour, private sector stakeholders, and financial institutions to establish a sustainable framework for affordable home ownership.
According to the President, the initiative will be supported by a GH¢3 billion revolving housing fund designed to finance the development of housing units for workers within the public service.
Under the proposed arrangement, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and Republic Bank Ghana will collaborate with the government and labour unions to operationalise the financing structure for the programme.
The fund will provide financial backing to state housing agencies, including the State Housing Company (SHC) and the Tema Development Corporation (TDC), to undertake housing projects in various parts of the country.
President Mahama further indicated that commercial banks participating in the initiative will offer long-term mortgage facilities to enable teachers, nurses, doctors, and other civil servants to acquire homes and repay over a period spanning 15 to 20 years.
He stressed that the programme is intended to expand access to affordable accommodation, promote sustainable home ownership among public sector workers, and improve the overall housing delivery system through structured and reliable financing mechanisms.
