Publish District Recruitment Quotas for Teachers – Eduwatch to GES

Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to release district-level recruitment quotas to strengthen transparency and accountability in the ongoing teacher recruitment exercise.

The Ghana Education Service, in a vacancy notice dated April 10, 2026, invited applications from qualified graduates with Bachelor of Education and related credentials for teaching appointments nationwide. The application window is expected to close on April 17.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Asare stressed that withholding quota allocations weakens oversight and limits the ability of stakeholders to assess whether recruitment aligns with actual staffing needs.

He argued that publishing district quotas would expose disparities in teacher distribution and compel district authorities to justify how recruitment slots are allocated and utilised.

According to him, transparency in the process would help prevent the concentration of teachers in already saturated districts while others continue to face persistent shortages.

He further urged government to implement the proposed 20 percent incentive for teachers posted to deprived areas, describing it as critical to improving attraction and retention in such communities.

Meanwhile, applicants have raised concerns about technical challenges on the recruitment portal, indicating that some Colleges of Education were initially missing, forcing candidates to select incorrect options to complete their applications.

The situation unfolds as thousands of graduates compete for limited teaching positions under the nationwide recruitment exercise.
