Licensure Exams to Be Fully Abolished by August 30, 2026

Richard Manuribe, a communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has clarified that teacher licensure examinations in Ghana will be completely abolished by August 30, 2026.

He explained that this development forms part of a broader policy transition aimed at reforming the teacher qualification system in a more structured and sustainable manner.

Speaking on the GHOne TV Breakfast Show on March 19, 2026, he emphasised that the decision will not be implemented abruptly. Instead, it will follow a systematic and well-coordinated administrative process. According to him, the government has already initiated pragmatic measures to ensure a smooth and orderly phase-out of the existing licensure regime.

He further indicated that all pending resit examinations will be conducted within the transition period to give affected candidates a fair opportunity to regularise their status. These processes, he noted, are expected to be concluded before the end of August 2026, thereby eliminating any backlog and ensuring that no candidate is unjustly disadvantaged.

Addressing public concerns, Manuribe pointed out that policy reversals of this magnitude require due diligence and must adhere to established legal and administrative frameworks. He cited the repeal of the E-Levy as a relevant example, explaining that although its abolition was announced earlier, its implementation followed a procedural timeline rather than taking immediate effect.

He concluded by reassuring the public that the transition is progressing steadily behind the scenes and should not be misconstrued as a delay. By the stipulated deadline, all matters relating to the licensure examinations will have been conclusively addressed, paving the way for a reformed and more efficient system for teacher certification.
