Electronic Road Toll System Set to Begin by Late 2026 – Parliamentary Committee Updates.
The Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament has confirmed that an electronic road toll system is expected to be implemented by the fourth quarter of 2026.
This was revealed by Mr. Isaac Adjei Mensah, Chairperson of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Wassa East, during a briefing with the Parliamentary Press Corps in Accra on Thursday.
The disclosure followed concerns raised earlier in the week by the Minority Caucus. Mr. Adjei Mensah explained that all necessary feasibility studies and preparatory measures for the toll system are nearing completion. He further stated that the NPP Minority lacks a valid basis to question the timeline of the policy’s rollout.
Highlighting the financial impact of the previous abolition of road tolls, Mr. Adjei Mensah noted that the toll system had previously generated about GH¢60 million per month for the government. He argued that eliminating the tolls caused substantial revenue losses, rendering the Minority’s criticisms unwarranted.
The Committee also addressed other issues raised, including the awarding of road contracts under the “Big Push” infrastructure program. It clarified that only 44 per cent of the 400 contracts were awarded through sole sourcing, while the remaining contracts were secured via competitive bidding.
Additional topics discussed included the Boankra Inland Port project, the Mpakadan Railway System, the restructuring of the Road Fund into the Road Maintenance Trust Fund, and the partial settlement of GH¢107 billion in outstanding road arrears.
The Committee underscored that the electronic toll system is designed to provide a reliable source of funding for road maintenance and infrastructure development, while promoting transparency and efficiency in revenue collection.
