Private Schools Mount Strong Opposition to GES' Ban on Graduation Ceremonies.
Private school operators in Accra are resisting a recent Ghana Education Service (GES) directive that prohibits graduation ceremonies, prom nights, and related celebrations in all pre-tertiary institutions.
The Greater Accra Regional Education Directorate issued the immediate ban across both public and private schools, citing the need to enforce discipline, promote financial equity, and ease the economic burden on families.
The government's decision follows viral social media footage depicting extravagant gifts and lavish parties at certain school events.
However, private school proprietors argue that the blanket restriction unfairly penalizes all institutions for the excesses of a few. Academic and economist Professor Peter Quartey criticized the policy on Joy FM, labeling it an overreaction.
He argued that these events serve as vital platforms to recognize student achievements and honor dedicated teachers.
Instead of a total prohibition, Quartey and other school administrators, some speaking anonymously, are urging the Ministry of Education to replace the ban with regulatory guidelines to curb extreme spending while preserving traditional school celebrations.
Some owners have warned that many institutions are already looking for ways to bypass the directive.
