GES Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar For SHS, SHTS

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the academic calendar for Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) for the 2026/2027 academic year. The calendar outlines key academic activities, including reopening dates, vacation periods, and examination schedules for both single-track and transitional school systems.

In a statement issued on June 1, GES confirmed that the calendar has been finalised. It therefore called on school authorities, students, parents, and other stakeholders to take note of the schedule and make proper preparations for the academic year.

For the single-track system, Form One and Form Two students are expected to resume on September 18, 2026. They will continue the first semester until January 29, 2027, after which they will break for vacation up to March 29, 2027. The second semester is scheduled to begin on March 30 and end on July 30, 2027.

Form Three students in single-track schools will also reopen on September 18, 2026. Their first semester will end on December 18, 2026. After a vacation period ending January 31, 2027, they will return to school on February 1 and complete their academic year on June 18, 2027.

In transitional schools, a blended learning arrangement will be implemented, combining physical and online instruction. Form One students will begin in-person classes on September 18, 2026, switch to online learning from November 16 to December 18, 2026, and later return for face-to-face sessions from February 8 to April 16, 2027. Another online learning period is scheduled from April 19 to May 14, 2027, before the second semester runs from June 21 to August 27, 2027.

Form Two students in transitional schools will start on November 16, 2026, and continue in-person learning until February 5, 2027. They will then shift to online learning from February 8 to March 5, 2027, before resuming the second semester from April 19 to August 27, 2027.

For Form Three students in transitional schools, academic activities will begin on September 18, 2026, and run until December 18, 2026. They will resume again on January 5, 2027, and conclude the academic year on June 18, 2027.

The calendar also includes holiday periods. The Christmas break is scheduled from December 19, 2026, to January 4, 2027, while the Easter break will run from March 25 to March 30, 2027.

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is expected to take place from April 6 to June 18, 2027. A mid-semester break for Form Two students has also been fixed for June 17 to June 20, 2027.

The Ghana Education Service has urged all stakeholders, especially school heads, teachers, parents, and students, to strictly adhere to the calendar and prepare adequately for the academic year.
