WAEC Arrests 43 Teachers Over Alleged BECE Examination Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council has confirmed the arrest of 43 teachers for their alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the recent Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), as the council intensifies efforts to protect the integrity of public examinations across the country.

The disclosure was made on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, during an interview with JoyNews. According to him, all the individuals arrested so far in connection with the malpractice incidents are teachers. He further clarified that students implicated in examination irregularities are not usually placed under arrest. Instead, their statements are taken and forwarded for further investigations before any final determination is made regarding their involvement.

Mr. Kapi explained that the arrests form part of broader measures being implemented by WAEC to curb examination malpractice and preserve the credibility and public confidence associated with national examinations. He stressed the council’s commitment to ensuring that examination rules and regulations are strictly enforced at all centres.

Meanwhile, WAEC has assured candidates, parents, and stakeholders that it is fully prepared for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Mr. Kapi noted that some practical papers and subjects, including Cost Accounting, have already been conducted successfully, while the English Oral examination is expected to take place on Wednesday, May 13.

He further stated that the council initially concentrated heavily on the BECE because of the large number of candidates involved and the overlap with preparations for the WASSCE. According to him, activities related to the senior high school examination will gradually intensify in the coming weeks as the examination process progresses nationwide.

WAEC also reaffirmed its determination to ensure a smooth, credible, and transparent administration of the WASSCE while maintaining strict supervision to discourage all forms of examination malpractice.
