According to details released, the exercise officially commenced on April 15, 2026, and is expected to end on May 31, 2026. During this period, both first-time applicants and existing members can register or renew their NHIS membership without paying registration charges or annual premiums. Authorities have also suspended the normal waiting period, allowing beneficiaries to access healthcare services immediately after successful registration or renewal.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen access to free primary healthcare services while increasing public participation in the national insurance programme. Public sensitisation campaigns are currently ongoing in various parts of the country to encourage citizens to take advantage of the opportunity before the deadline.
The NHIS was established in 2003 to replace the previous “cash and carry” healthcare system, where patients were required to pay the full cost of treatment before receiving medical attention.
