NIA Announces Resumption of Ghana Card Registration for Ages 6 to 14

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced the resumption of Ghana Card registration for children between the ages of 6 and 14. This phase of the exercise is scheduled to begin in May 2026.

Parents and guardians intending to register their children are required to present valid documentation. A birth certificate issued by the Births and Deaths Registry remains the primary requirement. In cases where this document is unavailable, a parent must accompany the child to the registration centre to support the process. A valid Ghanaian passport may also be accepted. Additionally, where a child is under the care of social services, two Social Welfare officers may be required to verify the child’s identity.

According to the official communication, the current phase of the registration exercise is specifically designated for residents in the Volta and Oti Regions. Parents and guardians within these areas are therefore encouraged to prepare all necessary documents ahead of time to ensure a smooth and successful registration process.

Key Requirements for Registration

To complete the registration, applicants must provide at least one of the following or meet the verification conditions outlined by the NIA:

▪ Original birth certificate

▪ Valid Ghanaian passport

▪ Presence of a parent or close relative to accompany the child

▪ Presence of a recognised legal guardian

▪ Two Social Welfare officers (in special cases where identity confirmation is required)

Notice to Other Regions

The NIA has clarified that this registration window is currently limited to the Volta and Oti Regions. Information on when the exercise will be extended to other parts of the country will be communicated at a later date.

Parents and guardians in other regions are advised to follow official NIA communication channels for timely updates so they can take part when the exercise reaches their areas.

Registration Statistics

As of 21st April 2026, the NIA reports that 19,440,513 individuals have been enrolled nationwide, while 18,737,670 Ghana Cards have been printed and issued.
