Newly Recruited Teachers Batch To Begin Work July 1 — Haruna Iddrisu
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has indicated that a new batch of recruited teachers will commence work across the country from July 1, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen staffing levels in schools nationwide.
He made this known in Parliament on Friday, May 29, where he also revealed that about 7,000 teachers are expected to be recruited.
According to him, discussions are still ongoing with the Ministry of Finance on the possibility of increasing the number of recruits, although any upward adjustment will depend on available budgetary allocation.
“I’m still engaging with the Honourable Minister for Finance to increase the numbers for recruitment of teachers, but it must be on budget,” he stated.
He further added that the matter could be reconsidered during the mid-year budget review.
The Minister also emphasised the need for inclusive recruitment, noting that concerns raised by visually impaired teachers during this year’s May Day celebration drew his attention to fairness in the process.
He recalled seeing a placard with the inscription, “Blind teachers are also teachers,” which he said served as a reminder for authorities to ensure equity in recruitment.
Mr. Iddrisu further pointed out a shortage of Ghanaian language teachers in some parts of the country, including the Greater Accra and Savannah Regions.
He explained that traditional leaders and other stakeholders have appealed for more dedicated language teachers to help improve learning outcomes among pupils.
According to him, research and experience show that children perform better academically when they are taught in their local language alongside English during the early stages of education.
“We should be having dedicated teachers because it is our firm belief and faith that when children learn with a local language as first language of instruction in addition to English, learning outcomes improve,” he said.
