Minister of Education Directs GES to Allocate Recruitment Quota to Prospective Teachers with Disabilities

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has formally instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reserve a defined proportion of its annual teacher recruitment slots for prospective candidates living with disabilities, in a move aimed at strengthening inclusivity within the sector.

He delivered this directive during an inspection visit to the Boako M/A Basic School examination centre in the Western North Region, where candidates were preparing to sit for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to the Minister, the decision is the result of thoughtful reflection and increasing public advocacy for equitable access and representation in education. He noted that meaningful inclusion must go beyond policy statements and translate into deliberate action within key state institutions.

Drawing from personal observations during the May Day commemorations, he highlighted the impact of safety campaigns by GRIDCo, alongside reports that showcased the competence and contributions of visually impaired teachers. These experiences, he indicated, reinforced the need to broaden opportunities for persons with disabilities in the teaching profession.

He therefore charged the leadership of GES to recalibrate its recruitment framework by embedding a structured quota system that guarantees entry for qualified applicants with disabilities. The directive, he stressed, is not merely symbolic but a necessary step towards building a more representative and responsive education workforce.

The Minister further underscored the importance of intentional policy measures in addressing longstanding disparities, noting that the education system must actively create space for all capable individuals to contribute meaningfully.

In addition to the recruitment directive, he also expressed concern over the persistent issue of unpaid teacher allowances, including car maintenance, transfer, and promotion-related entitlements. He assured that the matter would be escalated for engagement with the Finance Minister, with the aim of identifying sustainable solutions to address the arrears.
