Government Declares Wednesday May.....2026 a public Holiday.

The Government of Ghana has officially declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, as a statutory public holiday in observance of Eid-ul-Adha.

The announcement was contained in an official press release issued on May 15, 2026, which confirmed that the day has been set aside nationwide to mark Eid-ul-Adha, one of the most significant and widely celebrated festivals in the Islamic religious calendar.

According to the statement, the declaration forms part of government’s recognition of the religious significance of the occasion and its commitment to ensuring that citizens of the Islamic faith, as well as the general public, are given the opportunity to observe the day in a peaceful and meaningful manner.

The release, signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, urged all government institutions, private organisations, and the general public to take due note of the declaration and adhere strictly to the holiday arrangement.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is a major Islamic celebration observed by Muslims across the world. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s profound faith and obedience to God’s command when he demonstrated willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of submission. The occasion is marked by special congregational prayers held in mosques and open grounds, acts of charity, and the distribution of meat and food to family members, neighbours, friends, and the less privileged.

The festival is widely regarded as a period of reflection, gratitude, and generosity, reinforcing values of faith, obedience, and compassion within the Muslim community.

In line with the declaration, schools, public sector institutions, and many private businesses are expected to close on the stated date to allow full national participation in the religious observance.
