The National Service Authority has entered into a strategic partnership with Absa Bank Ghana and the National Service Personnel Association to introduce an overdraft facility for all active National Service Personnel (NSPs).
The initiative is aimed at addressing challenges linked to delays in the payment of monthly allowances and providing immediate financial relief to affected personnel nationwide.
objective of the partnership
This partnership is designed to cushion National Service Personnel against financial difficulties that arise when allowance disbursements are delayed. It seeks to ensure that personnel can continue to meet essential needs without undue hardship while serving the nation.
Remarks from the director-general
The Director-General of the NSA, Ruth Dela Seddoh, stated that the Authority acknowledges the concerns of service personnel regarding payment delays and is taking practical steps through this partnership to provide relief. She further noted that NASPA played a key role in facilitating the collaboration and representing the concerns of personnel across the country.
Structure of the overdraft facility
Under the partnership arrangement, Absa Bank will provide eligible NSPs with access to an overdraft facility of up to 85% of their monthly allowance. The facility is structured to offer immediate financial support during periods of delay, with no collateral requirement and zero interest applied throughout the delay period. Repayment will be automatically effected once the NSA releases the outstanding allowance.
Eligibility and account requirement
The facility is available to all active National Service Personnel who operate an Absa Ignition Account. Interested personnel are required to maintain this account in order to access the overdraft support, with onboarding made possible through the NSA online submission portal.
Features of the absa ignition account
The Absa Ignition Account is a youth-focused banking product that carries no maintenance fees. It also provides a free international debit card for online transactions and includes travel insurance coverage of up to GHS 100,000, offering added financial security for account holders.
Statement from absa bank
The Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana, Edward Nartey Botchway, indicated that the bank understands the pressure caused by delays in allowance payments, particularly for young graduates managing basic living costs. He emphasised that the partnership is intended to ensure that such delays do not disrupt the financial stability of service personnel.
conclusion
The National Service Authority reaffirmed its commitment to improving the efficiency and timeliness of allowance payments. It also expressed appreciation to all National Service Personnel for their continued contribution to national development, while strengthening collaboration with stakeholders to enhance service delivery.
