Ministry of Education Secures Clearance to Recruit 7,000 Teachers to Tackle Nationwide Shortages.

Efforts to strengthen teaching and learning in schools are set to receive a significant lift as government takes concrete steps to expand the teaching workforce and address persistent staffing gaps across the country.

The Ministry of Education has secured financial clearance to recruit 7,000 teachers in the coming months to help reduce the shortage affecting many classrooms.

Announcing the development at a press briefing in Accra on April 1, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, stated that the Ghana Education Service will open its recruitment portal from April 10 to July 1, 2026.

He acknowledged that the education system continues to face a deficit of teachers, revealing that more than 30,000 vacancies currently exist nationwide. He noted that this shortfall continues to affect effective lesson delivery and learning outcomes in schools.

According to the Minister, the 2026 national budget has made substantial provision for the education sector, exceeding GH¢39 billion, with part of the allocation dedicated to supporting the recruitment exercise.

He explained that graduates from 2022 to 2025 are eligible to apply, stressing that priority consideration will be given to applicants who are prepared to accept postings to areas where teacher demand is most critical.

Mr. Iddrisu further assured that the recruitment process will be strictly merit-based, transparent, and competitive, ensuring fairness for all qualified applicants.

He added that the entire process is expected to be completed on or before July 1, 2026.

In addition, he disclosed that tertiary institutions will undertake a limited recruitment exercise to strengthen academic staffing. About 1,200 lecturers are expected to be engaged under the supervision of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.

This initiative is expected to ease the workload on existing teachers while improving the quality of teaching and learning outcomes in schools nationwide.
