Government Plans Major Education and Sports Investments in Savannah Region — Mahama
In a bid to accelerate development and improve livelihoods in the Savannah Region, President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for major upgrades in education and infrastructure while addressing residents in Buipe during the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association.
He revealed initiatives including STEM schools in Tinga and Busunu, the elevation of all Senior High Schools in the region to Category A status, and the construction of a regional sports stadium to foster growth and empower the youth.
President Mahama highlighted the transformative role of education, stating, “Education is the bridge between where we are and where we aspire to be, and we are committed to substantial investment in education in the Savannah Region.”
He instructed the Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, to provide a bus for Buipe Senior High School, following a request from the Paramount Chief, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II.
Plans for the Savannah Sports Stadium in Damongo were also confirmed, aimed at promoting sports development and creating opportunities for young athletes in the region.
The Paramount Chief urged the government to strengthen measures against illegal mining along the Black Volta and pledged the traditional authority’s commitment to environmental protection and preservation of ancestral heritage. He further requested support for the construction of the Mpaha Junction–Debre road, which is currently under procurement.
Alhassan Baba Darison, National President of the Gonjaland Youth Association, called on the government to create new districts and upgrade existing ones to municipal status to accelerate development and improve local governance.
