NTC Trains GES District Officers and Private School Coordinators on Teacher Registration and CPD Point Upload.
The National Teaching Council (NTC) recently conducted a comprehensive training workshop for District Training Officers and Private School Coordinators of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to strengthen their understanding of the teacher professionalisation process and the management of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points for in-service teachers across both public and private schools.
Held in Kumasi and Accra, the workshop provided participants with detailed guidance on the requirements for CPD, teacher licensing procedures, and the legal frameworks that regulate the teaching profession in Ghana. Attendees were guided through structured pathways that allow non-professional teachers to enhance their qualifications and secure professional certification.
NTC facilitators emphasized the critical role of CPD points in the renewal of teacher registration, noting that ongoing professional development is essential for raising the standards of teaching in all educational institutions. They also highlighted mandatory certification protocols for teachers, which include registration, training, assessment, and strict adherence to professional codes of conduct.
The training further addressed the legal consequences of employing unlicensed teachers, underlining the necessity for compliance with the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023). Private school administrators were particularly urged to ensure that all teaching staff meet the prescribed requirements to avoid potential penalties.
Participants engaged in interactive discussions and practical exercises designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills to guide teachers through the professionalisation process. This initiative aligns with NTC’s broader mandate to uphold professionalism in teaching and ensure the delivery of high-quality education nationwide. The workshop was officially opened by Dr. Cecilia Esinam Agbeh, Deputy Registrar (Operations), who encouraged attendees to support the Council in implementing its mandate with fairness and integrity.
District officers and coordinators were tasked with assisting non-professional teachers to register for the pedagogical training required to obtain a temporary teaching certificate, valid for one year and renewable for an additional two years. Non-professional teachers are expected to pursue the necessary qualifications to transition into fully certified professional teachers.
To facilitate this, the Council has partnered with five universities, All Africa University of Science and Technology (AAMUSTED), University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Cape Coast (UCC), and Catholic University Ghana, to offer a fast-track Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme for graduate non-professional teachers. This 16–20 week programme is provided at a subsidized fee of GHC 5,000.
