The National Teaching Council (NTC) has put forward a proposal urging the government to introduce entrance examinations for individuals seeking admission into Colleges of Education.
This suggestion forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the quality of teacher training and ensure that only capable candidates enter the profession.
According to the Chairman of the NTC Governing Board, Kwami Alorvi, the proposed measure would serve as an additional layer of assessment to select the most suitable applicants. He explained that the current admission system tends to admit nearly all candidates who meet the basic requirements, a practice he believes does not always guarantee the training of highly competent teachers.
Speaking during an interview on Nnawotwe on Adom TV, Mr. Alorvi highlighted concerns about examination malpractice at the senior high school level. He indicated that some candidates allegedly engage in dishonest practices during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, gain admission into training colleges, and eventually join the teaching workforce without the required merit.
He further noted that introducing an entrance examination would act as a filtering mechanism to identify genuinely qualified candidates, thereby improving standards within the education sector. The recommendation, he added, has already been submitted to the Ministry of Education for review and possible implementation.
