‘If You Want to Work, Go to Districts Where There Are Vacancies and Apply There’ — John Dramani Mahama Tells Teachers.
John Dramani Mahama has announced a new direction in teacher recruitment, revealing plans to decentralise the hiring and posting system to correct the imbalance in teacher distribution across the country.
He made this known during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations on Monday, March 30, where he highlighted the limitations of the current centralised approach.
He explained that the existing system has led to a heavy concentration of teachers in urban centres, leaving many rural districts with inadequate staff. This situation, he noted, continues to affect effective teaching and learning, as some schools operate with fewer teachers than required while others have more than enough.
To address this challenge, he stated that recruitment and vacancy advertisement will now be handled at the district level. Each district will be responsible for identifying its staffing needs and publicly announcing available positions, allowing for a more balanced and need-based deployment of teachers.
Under this new arrangement, prospective teachers will be required to apply directly to districts where vacancies exist, rather than relying on a central posting system. He emphasised that some major cities, including Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, will not be open for recruitment for now because they already have a high number of teachers.
He further stressed that applicants must be willing to accept postings in areas where their services are needed most, adding that this approach is necessary to ensure fairness and improve access to quality education across all districts.

They will apply there alright but will pick release and move out after some time
